YAWEN TAN
ARTIST, FILMMAKER, COMPOSER, WRITER
BIO

Yawen Tan is a Chinese film director, composer, and writer based in Paris. Her creative practice is deeply informed by a decade of studies in philosophy and anthropology, as well as her personal journey through bipolar disorder and the violence she has endured as a woman.
Since her discharge from a psychiatric clinic in the United States in 2022, Yawen has been exploring the embodied experiences of women—their volcanic revolts, desires, contempt, love, hatred, and indomitable subjectivity—all of which have been silenced within male-dominated narratives. She is currently developing her debut feature film, “Duàn.”
Recognized for her contributions to the arts and humanities, she was featured by Stanford News in 2020 as an outstanding graduate. In 2023, Yawen was honored with the Asia-Pacific Leaders Initiative Outstanding Delegate Award.
